Collection: Sheep

"Sheep have always had some special meaning for me."
- Henry Moore

In February 1972, to escape the hustle and bustle of his busy workshops, Henry Moore retreated to a small studio overlooking fields where a local farmer grazed his sheep. They came very close, attracting his attention, and he began to draw them.

Initially Moore saw them as four-legged balls of wool, but his vision changed as he grew to understand them better. The sight of a ewe with her lamb – a large form sheltering a small one – evoked the mother-and-child theme which resonated with Moore throughout all his work.
