Description

Catching Some Air is a continuous project, grounded in the practice of working with images and collected information from art history, history, journals, news, magazines, advertisements and other resources. The forming of such an archive is explicitly based on our subjective knowledge and experience. Discoveries, references, correspondences and other things that interest us create a collection of choices which functions as a platform of communication, between us and on a more general level.”

- Bik Van der Pol, writing in Catching Some Air, 2010

Liesbeth Bik and Jos van der Pol came to the Henry Moore Institute on a visiting research fellowship in October 2000. Working in the Sculpture Research Library, they stocked up on a wide range of images, photocopying anything they felt they might want to come back to in the future.

Moving abroad with their battery of pictures, they made traced drawings from the photocopies each time they revisited a given image or idea. These images are presented in this book, sent back to the Institute after a period of months had elapsed, and after the artists had done projects in New York and Stockholm.

With an introduction by Penelope Curtis (Curator of the Henry Moore Institute) and three short essays alongside over 140 drawings by Bik Van der Pol:
