Description

The exhibition Hounds in Leash: the dog in 18th and 19th century sculpture brought together British and French sculptures of lap dogs, sporting hounds and legendary beasts, celebrating the uniquely close bond between man and dog. This catalogue takes a look at how the dog acts as a key to reading a changing society from the eighteenth century to the present day.

With an introduction by the exhibition's curator, Stephen Feeke, a catalogue of the exhibits on display, and three essays:

Representations of Domestic Animals in Britain 1730-1840
Matthew Craske

The Effect of Pets in the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries
Jonathan Burt

The Refusal of Sentimentality in Postmodern Animal Art
