INDEX 1972-1992 Serge Spitzer
INDEX 1972-1992 Serge Spitzer
Description
Over the past twenty years Serge Spitzer has developed a kind of sculptural language, neither discourse nor commentary, but consisting of forms, objects, materials and ways of doing things taken from widely differing contexts.
To understand a language one must be familiar with its vocabulary; no easy matter in the case of Spitzer's installations, as they are scattered over the United States and Europe, and most of them no longer exist anyway.
The purpose of this catalogue is to survey twenty years of sculptural work, which no exhibition could ever assemble, to index Spitzer's vocables and their syntactic connections and show how art can process its external content without becoming a commentary.
Written in English, German and Spanish, this catalogue features an introduction by the curators, a comprehensive catalogue of works exhibited, and the following essays:
Applied Radicality: Some Issues in the Installation of Serge Spitzer
Dan Cameron
Prolegomena on a Symbolic Model for Sculpture
Franz-W. Kaiser
A Talk by Harold Szeemann at the Inauguration of 'Hanover Relevator'
