Description

Bernard Schottlander (1924-99) was born in Mainz, Germany and fled to England in 1939. He was first a designer and later a sculptor, and these two essays, written by the curators of his design and sculpture archives, reveal the common threads and continuities between both disciplines.

Though Schottlander’s design work was made for the interior, and his sculpture for the exterior, in all his work positioning is of the primary importance. His constant interest in colour, and perhaps above all in scale, were played out through his use of maquettes, mock-ups and photography, so that the world, whether indoors or out, became something of a stage for his objects.
