Description

This catalogue documents three exhibitions by British artist John Newling, which mark a major development within his work.

Exclusively using positive and negative moulds in a long series of works over a number of years, Newling confined himself to a very narrow set of methodologies, from which he nevertheless generated a prolific output. For his 1990 exhibition John Newling: Filters, held at the Henry Moore Studio in Dean Clough, Halifax, Newling extended his practice by creating his first site specific project.

Building on this in the following year, his two exhibitions in Nottingham – New Architecture at the Angel Row Gallery and Lost at the Bonington Gallery – presented contextually-specific works, taking part of their significance from their locations in Nottingham.

A text by Simon Herbert explores this new branch of Newling's work, accompanied by photography from each of the exhibitions.
