Description

Mario Merz (1925-2003) rethought the possibilities of sculpture, working from observation to propose an invigorated way of perceiving the natural world. Drawing together incompatible materials into groups of meaning, his constructions are proposals for considering how objects are used to negotiate our place in the world.

Written by Lisa Le Feuvre (Head of Sculpture Studies, the Henry Moore Institute), this issue of Essays on Sculpture launched our new design of the journal. Paying attention to the ways in which he used materials as 'protagonists', it studies the importance of sculptural and political thinking in Merz's artistic practice.
