Description

Writing is central to Michael Dean’s work, and placing spoken or written words in space as much a sculptural gesture as his cast concrete forms. Made to be the perfect size to be carried or else monumental in scale, their surfaces are ridged and veined, offering invitations to be touched. His sculptures spell out their titles in abstracted typography, generated using the economical language of human activities and accompanied by intimate, observational texts exploring the object qualities of words.

Published on the occasion of Michael Dean's solo exhibition Government at the Henry Moore Institute, this book presents a carefully chosen group of nine ‘selected writings’ by the artist, alongside documentation of his work in exhibitions, a foreword by Lisa Le Feuvre (Head of Sculpture Studies, the Henry Moore Institute) and the following essays:

Giving flesh to words
Pavel S. Pyś (Exhibitions and Displays Curator, the Henry Moore Institute)

The Miracle of Objects, or, ‘the wind bloweth where it listeth’
Lisa Le Feuvre
