Description
This book examines the innovative artists in 1960s Japan who made art in the 'wilderness' – away from Tokyo, outside traditional norms, and with little institutional support-with global resonances.
One such artist was Jiro Takamatsu (1936-98), who was central to the development of post-war art in Japan. He expanded points into volume, brought sculptural actions into the life of the city, and made shadows and perspective tangible.
In 2017 the Henry Moore Institute opened The Temperature of Sculpture, the first institutional solo exhibition of Takamatsu outside of his home country, presenting over seventy works made between 1961 and 1977.
