Description

"There, emerging from the evaporating mud is a small, oddly shaped protuberance. It is almost invisible, but at this angle, at this time of day, the slight form is accentuated by
shadow, picked out by the glare of the strong sunlight. With polished professionalism, its presence is marked, measured and photographed before it is gently wrought free from the sediment. Cradling it gently in her palm, her finger lightly brushes greyish-brown fragment and then she turns towards me – ‘its leather’, she says.

"This was my first experience of recovering a piece of glacial archaeology."

This publication was written by artist Sarah Casey to accompany her exhibition at Henry Moore Institute, Sarah Casey: Negative Mass Balance. In it, she discusses her time spent on fieldwork trips in the Swiss Alps, and the artworks that emerged as a result: her Ablations series of prints, miniature Ice Watch sculptures and the ephemeral Emergency! What Was Is.
