Description

Between 1975 and 1980 Thomas Schütte, still studying at the Düsseldorf Academy, worked with lightweight, insubstantial materials, and almost exclusively on the wall.

Beginning in painting, his work became sculptural only gradually. By cutting up the canvas, by assigning it an illusionistic character aligned to stage design, Schütte gave his two-dimensional work a three-dimensional aspect which at once takes on the wall and breaks through it.

This catalogue presents an intriguing and thorough examination of Schütte’s early work. Comprising sketches and photographs taken throughout his student years, each piece of ephemera is introduced and contextualised by Penelope Curtis (Curator of the Henry Moore Institute), and presented alongside installation photography of the Institute’s exhibition.
